Boston law firm Sugarman Rogers announced today that Kate Cook has been elected as a shareholder of the firm, effective January 2018.

Kate is the leader of the firm’s Government Law practice group, and works with public and private clients to solve problems related to compliance with federal, state and local law. She also assists businesses and public entities in litigation relating to government regulation and policy. Before joining Sugarman Rogers in early 2015, Kate was chief legal counsel to Massachusetts governor Deval Patrick and had extensive other experience in state and local government.

Sugarman Rogers managing partner Christine Netski welcomed the news of Kate’s election to the partnership: “This is a well-deserved recognition for Kate, who has been a terrific addition to the firm. Her experience and insight are matched by a keen sense of what is right and practical, and that makes her an ideal colleague. Kate’s government work blends well with many of our service areas, and we are excited to see her grow the practice.”

As counsel for Governor Patrick, Kate provided advice within the governor’s office and throughout the executive branch on legal, regulatory, and policy matters, and worked on a wide range of issues affecting the citizens of Massachusetts. She has also worked as an attorney in the City of Boston Law Department and as general counsel to the Massachusetts Senate Ways and Means Committee.

Kate is co-chair of the Boston Bar Association’s Civil Rights and Civil Liberties section, and serves on the board of the Women’s Lunch Place. She graduated from Brown University and obtained her J.D. from Harvard Law School.
